Get found in AI search: GEO, AEO and AI visibility explained

More people now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews instead of scrolling through search results. If those tools don't know your business, or describe it wrongly, you lose customers you never see. This page explains what AI search visibility is, how to appear in AI answers, and how to track it, and how Digital Astra Vidya can review it for you.

AI visibility, GEO and AEO in plain words

You will hear several names for the same goal: being the business that AI tools mention, quote and recommend.

AI visibility

AI search visibility

How often, and how accurately, AI tools mention your brand, cite your website or recommend you when people ask about your field.

GEO

Generative Engine Optimization

Improving your content and online presence so generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude use and cite it in the answers they write.

AEO

Answer Engine Optimization

Structuring your content so it gives direct, clear answers that search features and AI assistants can pick up and show, such as AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice answers.

GEO and AEO build on SEO rather than replace it. AI tools still need to find, crawl and trust your pages, so good SEO remains the foundation.

How to appear in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude

No one can guarantee a mention. These are the factors that make one far more likely.

  • Let AI crawlers inCheck that your robots.txt, security plugins and hosting firewall allow crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT), Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot. Many sites block them without knowing.
  • Get indexed in Google and BingGoogle's AI Overviews and AI Mode draw on Google's search index, and several assistants rely partly on Bing. Submit your sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Answer questions directlyPut a clear, two or three sentence answer near the top of each page, then the detail. Use the questions your customers actually ask as headings.
  • Make it clear who you areUse one consistent business name, a detailed About page, author bios and Organization schema, so AI tools can connect your site to your brand.
  • Be mentioned beyond your websiteAI tools learn from reviews, directories, news, YouTube, LinkedIn and forums. Mentions on trusted sites often matter as much as your own pages.
  • Show real experienceOriginal examples, data and first-hand results are harder to find elsewhere, which makes them more likely to be cited.
  • Keep content currentUpdate key pages when your field changes, and show the date. AI answers favour information that looks up to date.
  • Keep pages simple to readFast pages, real text rather than text in images, and clear headings make your content easier for crawlers to understand.

How to track your AI visibility

There is no single dashboard for every AI tool yet. Combine these free methods for a reliable picture.

  • Test real questionsList 20 to 30 questions your customers ask. Each month, ask them in ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, Copilot and Google, and note whether you are mentioned, whether your site is linked, and whether the description is correct.
  • Google Search ConsoleThe generative AI performance report shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It currently shows impressions only, without clicks or queries.
  • Bing Webmaster ToolsThe AI Performance report shows how often your pages are cited in Microsoft Copilot and Bing's AI answers, and a sample of the queries behind them.
  • Google Analytics 4Visits from AI tools arrive as referrals. Create a custom channel group called "AI Traffic" with a source rule that matches this pattern, and place it above Referral:(chatgpt|openai|perplexity|claude|gemini\.google|copilot\.microsoft)
  • Crawler activityYour hosting or CDN reports, or server logs, show whether AI crawlers such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot are visiting your site at all.
  • Brand demandA rise in branded searches and direct visits often follows more AI mentions, even when the AI answer itself sends no click.

Common questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO builds on SEO. SEO helps your pages rank in search results; GEO helps AI tools use and cite your content in the answers they write. Most of the groundwork, such as crawlable pages, clear content and a trusted brand, helps both.

Can you guarantee my business will appear in ChatGPT or AI Overviews?

No. Nobody can honestly guarantee that, because each AI tool decides for itself what to show. What we can do is remove the blocks that keep you out and strengthen the signals that make a mention more likely, then track the results.

How long does it take to show up in AI answers?

It varies. Fixing crawler access and indexing can help within weeks. Building the mentions and reputation that AI tools rely on usually takes months.

Do I need an llms.txt file?

It can help AI tools understand your site and costs little to add, but it is a proposed standard and the major AI companies have not confirmed that they use it. Treat it as a small extra, not a priority.

Does blocking AI crawlers protect my content?

It keeps your content out of those tools, but it also means they cannot cite or recommend you. Most businesses that want customers to find them should allow the search crawlers of the major AI tools.
